What inspired you to start your business? Share your unique vision or motivation.

Throughout my life, I've been deeply connected to art, often finding solace and a sense of self within its creative realms. Even before understanding the concept of therapy, I instinctively turned to art as a source of comfort. After completing my education, I sought to merge my academic knowledge with my artistic passion. Hosting friends in my art studio, where they could unwind, chat, and freely express themselves through art, became a cherished pastime. Witnessing how this simple act helped them release burdens in a safe, non-judgmental space and take home something they'd created sparked an idea. I realized I could turn this passion into a business, offering others the opportunity to rediscover the joy of childhood creativity through art. My goal is to create a space where people can relax, reconnect with themselves, and experience the simple pleasure of artistic expression.

How does your cultural background or personal experiences influence your business approach?

My cultural background and personal experiences, coupled with my education in psychology, humanities, and women and gender studies, profoundly influence my approach to business. Studying psychology has equipped me with insights into human behavior, communication, and the importance of creating supportive environments. This knowledge informs how I engage with clients, employees, and stakeholders, fostering empathy, understanding, and effective collaboration.

My education in humanities has nurtured my appreciation for diverse perspectives, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving. This interdisciplinary lens allows me to approach challenges with flexibility, adaptability, and a commitment to innovation.

Furthermore, my studies in women and gender studies have heightened my awareness of social inequalities, power dynamics, and the importance of intersectional perspectives in business. This awareness shapes my commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within my organization and broader community.

In summary, my cultural background, personal experiences, and educational journey converge to shape a business approach rooted in empathy, creativity, inclusivity, and social responsibility.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced as a diverse business owner and how did you overcome them?

As a diverse business owner, my greatest challenge lies in the gap between my passion and vision for my business and the practical knowledge and resources needed to bring that vision to fruition. While I'm clear on my goals and the big picture, the intricacies of business management often feel like uncharted territory. As a woman and mother accustomed to independently finding solutions, it's mentally challenging to admit the need for external assistance, compounded by uncertainty about where to seek help.

To overcome this hurdle, I recognize the importance of reaching out to mentors or advisors with expertise in entrepreneurship. Despite the internal resistance, I understand that their guidance can provide invaluable insights and direction. Moreover, I'm exploring tailored educational resources, such as online courses and workshops, to bridge my knowledge gaps and acquire practical skills essential for business success.

Embracing support networks designed for women entrepreneurs is another avenue I'm exploring. These communities offer not only mentorship and networking opportunities but also a supportive environment where I can connect with peers facing similar challenges. By acknowledging my need for support and actively seeking out resources and networks, I'm taking proactive steps to equip myself with the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to navigate the complexities of business ownership and realize my entrepreneurial aspirations.

Describe your products or services in a way that showcases your unique perspective or offering.

I provide both group and individual art sessions tailored to meet the diverse needs of my clients. Group sessions typically center around meditation practices, fostering a serene and reflective atmosphere. Meanwhile, individual sessions are customized to address the unique goals and preferences of each client. Sessions typically span between one to one and a half hours, offering flexibility in pacing and content. Depending on the client's preferences, our sessions may involve varying degrees of dialogue. Some clients seek feedback on specific topics, while others prefer to use the session as an opportunity to freely express themselves. Additionally, for those interested in honing their artistic skills, sessions can be focused on technique development. Each session is structured to promote mental clarity and creative expression. We begin with breathwork to center the mind, followed by a 'brain dump' exercise to release thoughts and emotions. The core of the session revolves around doodle art, where clients have the freedom to explore their creativity using pen and paper. While the primary medium is pen and paper, clients have the option to explore different art styles upon request, ensuring a personalized and enriching experience.

How do you aim to make a positive impact on your community or industry?

I aim to make a positive impact on my community and industry by addressing a common need for genuine human connection and meaningful engagement. Many individuals I encounter express a desire for connection beyond traditional social settings like drinks or casual outings. Through my art sessions, I strive to create a space where people can connect on a deeper level while exploring their creativity in a unique and fulfilling way. By providing opportunities for personal expression and introspection through art, I hope to empower individuals to tap into their inner selves and find solace, inspiration, and connection. My goal is to offer an alternative avenue for social interaction—one that fosters authenticity, emotional expression, and mutual understanding. Through these efforts, I aspire to contribute to a more vibrant and connected community, where individuals feel supported, understood, and inspired to explore new avenues of personal growth and self-expression.

What strategies have you found successful in reaching and engaging your target audience?

Continuously refining strategies to effectively reach and engage my target audience remains an ongoing endeavor. Thus far, I've discovered that consistency plays a pivotal role in fostering connection and awareness. By maintaining a regular presence on social media platforms, I ensure that my brand remains visible and top of mind for potential clients throughout the week. Additionally, I've cultivated supportive partnerships with businesses where I host my sessions, leveraging their platforms to extend my reach. Their endorsement through social media posts and content sharing has proven to be invaluable in expanding my audience. Furthermore, I've garnered momentum through word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied friends and customers, as well as by actively participating in female entrepreneurship groups. These communities not only provide valuable insights and support but also serve as fertile ground for networking and collaboration. While I continue to explore and refine my approach, I remain open to learning from others' experiences and strategies. I welcome the opportunity to engage in discussions and exchange insights with fellow entrepreneurs, recognizing the collective wisdom that emerges from sharing experiences and ideas.

What resources or support do you think would be most valuable for micro and small diverse businesses like yours?

I am actively seeking additional resources on securing small business grants, acquiring startup funds, and mastering the financial aspects of business management. Recognizing the critical importance of financial stability, I am committed to equipping myself with the knowledge and tools necessary to sustain and grow my business successfully.

Furthermore, I am eager to access support and guidance on effectively organizing and prioritizing tasks within my small business. Despite my dedication, I sometimes encounter challenges in determining the most crucial steps or optimizing data management processes. By enhancing my organizational skills and streamlining workflows, I am confident I can maximize productivity and achieve my business goals more efficiently.

Additionally, I am a strong advocate for fostering a culture of mutual support and collaboration within the small business community. As a new entrepreneur facing financial constraints, I believe in the power of service trades as a means of leveraging our respective skills and expertise. I am enthusiastic about offering my services in exchange for valuable insights and assistance from fellow business owners, recognizing that such partnerships can fuel collective growth and success.

What are your goals and aspirations for your business in the coming years?

My overarching vision for my business is to establish an inclusive art center that serves as a sanctuary for creative expression and therapeutic exploration. This center will offer a diverse range of art mediums tailored specifically for therapeutic purposes, providing individuals with a safe and nurturing environment to connect with their inner selves and find solace through art.

Continuing to build upon this vision, I am dedicated to expanding the availability of workshops, art meditations, and individual art sessions, ensuring consistent opportunities for people to engage with and benefit from these transformative experiences. By fostering a welcoming and supportive atmosphere, I aim to create a sense of belonging and empowerment, where individuals can freely express themselves and find respite from life's stresses through the healing power of art.

Ultimately, my goal is to establish the art center as a trusted community resource, where individuals of all backgrounds can access the therapeutic benefits of art in a sustainable and accessible manner. Through dedication, passion, and a commitment to holistic well-being, I am confident in realizing this vision and making a meaningful impact in the lives of those we serve.

What advice would you give to aspiring diverse entrepreneurs or nonprofit founders just starting out?

For any aspiring entrepreneur, especially those from diverse backgrounds, my key advice is to prioritize building a strong and supportive community. Invest time in getting to know your customers on a deeper level, understanding their wants, needs, and preferences. Be open and adaptable, ready to pivot your business direction if necessary to better align with your customers' desires. Equally important is to cultivate a network of like-minded individuals within the business community who share your values and vision. Surround yourself with supportive peers and mentors who can offer valuable insights, guidance, and encouragement along your entrepreneurial journey. By building both a loyal customer base and a supportive network of fellow entrepreneurs, you'll not only enhance the success of your business but also foster a sense of belonging and collaboration within your industry.

What message do you want to share with the audience about the significance of diverse small businesses or nonprofits?

It is crucial for the future of our communities to embrace and support diverse small businesses and nonprofits. Our nation's foundation is built upon the principles of diversity and the entrepreneurial spirit of small businesses. Now more than ever, it is imperative for us to acknowledge and uphold this significance within our own community.

As our country's governing bodies engage in political maneuvers that often seem disconnected from our everyday lives, it falls upon us at the grassroots level to ensure that our lives authentically reflect who we are and what we value. Diverse small businesses serve as a tangible reflection of our community's identity, representing the rich tapestry of cultures, perspectives, and talents that make us unique.

By championing and patronizing diverse small businesses, we not only contribute to the economic vitality of our community but also affirm our commitment to inclusivity, creativity, and individuality. Together, let us cultivate an environment where diverse voices are heard, celebrated, and empowered to thrive, shaping a future that embodies the true essence of who we are as a community.
