What inspired you to start your nonprofit? Share your unique vision or motivation.
I have always had artistic abilities beginning at a very young age. As I got older and as different mediums became popular, I dappled here and there with ones that not only brought me enjoyment, but also thrived based off my creativity. Once I found my niche, I didnt want it to go to waste by creating items that would never leave my home or sit in someone’s closet. I wanted to create items that individuals would be proud to showcase to others. This became the basis of Ethereal Etchings LLC…to create items that are functional for home use as decor, gifts, etc.
Describe your products or services in a way that showcases your unique perspective or offering.
The services I offer are primarily customizable and i offer personalization for a unique and personal touch. Ethereal Etchings LLC provides an array of glass and mirrored items to etch or potential customers may provide their own items/ideas. We also produce resin home decor from a “functional” aspect, such as wall art/decor, centerpieces, trays, tables, etc. Having both etchings and resin as our primary niche sets us apart from other businesses as it takes time, experience, and creativity to produce these items and makes it difficult for others to duplicate.
What strategies have you found successful in reaching and engaging your target audience?
Our strategy for audience reach is to step outside the conventional social media posts and vendor events. Ethereal Etchings LLC is featured not only with Diverse Hampton Roads, but also with Small Shop Discovery and our larger resin home decor is physically showcased in Blue Skies Gallery, Hampton, Virginia. Our business cards and signage also feature a scannable qr code which links directly to our website. Though social media offers a “reach” that would be expected, we must be cognizant of those who do not have social media or cannot fully navigate the internet or apps. Being part of ‘business directories’ such as Diverse Hampton Roads and Shop Small Discovery provides another method for business inquiries/searches in a one-stop shop. Lastly, placing our largest or more expensive products within an art gallery not only solidifies the value of our work, both monetary and form juried professionals, but also gives an eyes-on experience for referrals, home renovation/decor purposes, etc. This particular audience is more inclined to inquire about our services and refer others once they get an up-close visualization.
What are your goals and aspirations for your business in the coming years?
Our current short-term goal is product and marketing revamping. The plan is to begin each season with a new collection versus re-presenting the same items from previous seasons to expand our variety of products. Also, as resin is becoming more popular, we want to ensure our etching line does not become stagnant, so a biggest push on these items as well as introducing larger or more unique glass/mirrored items will be forthcoming.
What advice would you give to aspiring diverse entrepreneurs or nonprofit founders just starting out?
Do your research and/or network! If you don’t know where to begin, the U.S. Small Business Administration has both a website and social media to assist business owners or those wishing to start. Score also has a website and social media to assist for startup and growth but also provides certified mentors in your area. Lastly, if you are not an avid reader/researcher to browse through the aforementioned business sites, you can always visit your local employment office where they can provide the same resources, networking events, checklists, etc.
